A small business in need of a forklift may baulk at the price of a new one and may instead consider a serviceable pre-owned unit at a lower capital outlay.
Some manufacturers and suppliers of new forklifts offer used forklifts as well. Fully refurbished and guaranteed forklifts are for sale at a lower price than a new forklift. The guarantee is usually given in months and/or hours. Note that one could forfeit certain warranty conditions if the forklift is not maintained as stipulated by its manufacturer.
When buying a used forklift privately, no guarantee is offered and a knowledgeable person must carefully inspect the forklift to ensure that it is serviceable. The engine and transmission should be in good running order and there may be no serious damage to the frame, wheels or roof. The forks, mast, tilt cylinders and backrest must all be in good condition and functioning smoothly without any hydraulic fluid leaks.
Some forklifts have special safety devices that cut the engine power and lock the mast and tilting cylinders in place as soon as the operator leaves his seat. These should be in fully working order.
The condition of the oils and hydraulic fluids should be noted in order to ascertain whether the forklift has been maintained as stipulated by the manufacturer. It should also be accompanied by a full service record as supporting evidence. Servicing is typically required every 250 hours, but this can vary according to the type of forklift. Extended service contracts can be bought for used forklifts, but familiarise yourself with their terms and conditions, to steer clear of voiding the contract.
Used forklifts are available in the classifieds and at forklift suppliers. By following a few simple rules and using common sense, you can obtain a reliable used forklift at a reasonable price.
