Forklift Maintenance

Regular And Incidental Forklift Maintenance

Good forklift maintenance starts with you, the owner of the lifting equipment. The first thing that you need to do upon the purchase of a forklift is to ensure that you and your forklift are well acquainted with the owner’s manual paying special attention to the maintenance requirements for your forklift. In this section of the owner’s manual you will find a specific set of checks that need to be made every time the forklift is turned on.

These forklift maintenance checks are pretty simple but can help the early detection of any problems that may have occurred or may take place in the future. Not determining these faults early on could result in the forklift malfunctioning or even catastrophic breakdown of the equipment. Next you need to be sure that you are aware of how often your forklift will need to be serviced by a qualified mechanic. Wear and tear is an inevitable part of the functioning of just about any type of machinery and equipment and regular servicing will ensure that any parts that have worn down will be replaced.

As part of the regular forklift maintenance checks and the servicing of the equipment new lubrication needs to be applied. This regular oiling of the machinery will minimise the amount of wear and tear on the working parts of the machine as well as increase the life span of your forklift. Always remember to be aware of the maximum running time of your forklift. This can vary greatly between different makes and models from 4 hours to an upper limit of 8 hours. Make sure that your forklift is never used for an ongoing time period that exceeds this limit. Exceeding the time limit will result in the equipment over heating and experiencing a greater amount of wear and tear. In addition, over working your forklift will negate any warranty you have for the equipment.

Making sure that your forklifts are in good running order at all times is not only there to protect your investment but to keep your employees who work with and around the forklift safe from a number of health and safety related hazards. Safety in the workplace should always be a priority especially when working with heavy machinery and equipment that could result in injuries and even fatalities.
